THE CASE AGAINST SMOKING
The medical case against smoking would fill a book. Its dangers have been widely publicized, yet tobacco consumption continues to grow in most countries. Ever-younger children acquire the cigarette habit. The steepest increase at the moment is in young women. People seldom enjoy their first cigarettes but many take them up because of the admen’s stereotype of the cigarette smoker as a sophisticated, companionable person.
The social pressure to smoke is strong. Even stronger is the highly effective advertising and promotion (almost 80 million pounds was spent in Britain in 1975), to which people of all ages are exposed. This dominates the currently puny efforts by the British Government (1 million pounds in that year) to reveal the dangers of the habit. The U.S. Government is somewhat ambivalent. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare vigorously campaigns against smoking, while the Department of Agriculture generously supports tobacco farming.
