ENERGY NEEDS OF THE BODY: ENERGY ALLOWANCES
The recommended daily allowances for kilocalories can be only approximate because of individual variations. For persons who are lighter or heavier than the reference individual, the allowances would be decreased or increased. Women who have average physical activity require about 35 kcal per kilogram (16 kcal per pound), and men with average physical activity require about 38 kcal per kilogram (17 kcal per pound). The allowances for persons who are sedentary would be decreased, while those for persons engaged in hard physical labor would be much more.
The allowances for infants and for children are very high in proportion to their body size so that there is ample energy for growth as well as the high level of physical activity. Note, for example, that the 30-kg child between 7 and 10 years requires about 2400 kcal – a level that is more than his mother needs and only 300 kcal less than his father needs.
Ordinarily, no calorie adjustments need to be made for climate. Most Americans live in well-heated buildings in winter and wear warm clothing. Many people now also work in air-conditioned buildings in the summer.
