ILLNESSES OF CHILDREN: BRUISES AND BURNS
Bruises
We can all bruise and it is caused by the rupturing of tiny blood vessels under the skin after a blow or bump. The pain of a bruise can be relieved by using cold compresses of fresh water and ice. Do not use salt water as it will further damage the bruise. If a child goes to bed without bruises and wakes up with them, or bruising occurs without reason, then discuss this with your practitioner.
The best way to treat a bruise after applying cold packs is to use the herb arnica. A tincture of ointment made from the herb is used for external application to sprains, bruises and wounds. Children who bruise easily should be encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables. Supplementing the diet with bioflavonoids and vitamin ? can strengthen the blood vessels and help prevent bruising.
Burns
Unfortunately children burn themselves accidentally. There are many causes of burns including sun, chemicals, fire, electricity, friction, boiling water and steam.
Serious burns should always be treated by a medical practitioner and are often coupled with shock and infection. If the burn size is larger than a 20 cent piece, or involves the face, hands or genitals, it is serious.
There are two main classifications of burns – the first are deep thickness burns which affect the deeper tissue. The area burnt may look white or black and charred. Often there is no pain as the nerves that sense pain have been damaged or destroyed. Superficial burns are on the surface, are red and may have blisters. For all burns, run cold water on the burn for 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity. Do not apply oily lotions of any kind, do not give any alcohol, only small sips of water, do not break any blisters and do not put on dressings which will stick to the burn. If the burn is serious a medical practitioner’s help should be sought immediately.
As the burnt skin recovers, or if it is not serious, it needs to be treated to aid healing and promote recovery. The best known herb for this is aloe vera which can be taken directly from the plant and applied to the skin. A commercial gel is available which helps cell re-growth. Zinc is a mineral which aids healthy skin and is an important supplement. Vitamin ? is important also for the health of the skin’s collagen or ‘cement’. Vitamin E helps prevent scarring.
