ANGINA AND SMOKING: STAYING HEALTHY
Two other skills that can help during this early period are relaxation and sensible eating. Relaxation can help you to cope better with any stress that caused you to smoke, and with any that results from giving up, such as irritability or feeling unable to relax. Sensible eating can help prevent any weight gain that may occur as you give up. This may happen firstly because nicotine reduces the uptake of sugar from the gut, and therefore when you stop smoking more of the calories you take in are available to your body. Perhaps more important, however, is that smoking directly (and indirectly as food loses its taste) reduces appetite. Thus people who give up often simply eat more food than before. Ways of eating sensibly and losing weight are looked at in other parts of the book and will not be examined here in detail.
However, it is perhaps worth mentioning that smoking is far more damaging to the heart than being overweight. Some people do gain weight after they stop smoking. However, the benefits of stopping smoking far outweigh any problems linked to an increase in weight.
It is difficult to stop smoking and cut down eating at the same time. As a rule of thumb, it is better to lose any weight gain a few weeks after you have stopped smoking (and are feeling confident in keeping off cigarettes) than trying to do both at the same time.
