ILLNESSES OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN: CIGARETTE SMOKING
Cigarette smoking has been promoted by advertisers as a desirable image of sophistication, elegance, success and maturity. It has unfortunately captured the imaginations of many teenagers who think smoking is grown up. Once hooked, people depend on cigarettes for stimulation, stress relief, weight control, or it becomes an uncontrollable habit. Unfortunately men appear to be smoking less while women appear to be smoking more and they start during adolescence.
As people reject the image of smoking and give up, the burning issue of passive smoking arises. Non-smokers become subjected to side-stream smoke which is the smoke which comes directly off the cigarette and seems to have a magic ability to go straight up the non-smoker’s nose. According to research, the side-stream smoke has more toxins than smoke drawn through the filter, making passive smoking a real health threat and doubling the dangers of smoking.
If your child or you smoke then you increase the risk of cancer by 25 times, depending on the length of time you have smoked, and the risk of cancer of the throat and mouth by 10 J times. You double the risk of heart disease (and the risk is even higher if you are a woman taking oral contraceptives), and you will almost certainly contract chronic bronchitis and increase your chances of catching colds, flu and sore throat. You shorten your life by 5 minutes with each cigarette you smoke. Pregnant women run a higher risk of miscarriage and giving birth to a stillborn baby and their baby will be smaller and perhaps less intelligent. Disorders of the circulation and coldness of the extremities can lead to degeneration of tissue.
Giving up? The best way to start is with a juice fast. This method helps the body cleanse itself by increasing the capacity of the lungs, liver, kidneys and skin to eliminate toxins. This elimination of poisons and metabolic waste from the body also helps remove the desire to smoke.
As large amounts of vitamin ? are destroyed with smoking, it is advised you supplement your diet while smoking and after giving up. Research done by Dr Gary Duthie of Rowett Research Institute of Aberdeen, Scotland, indicated that smokers are under higher oxidant stress than non-smokers and this stress can be partially compensated for with vitamin E supplements.
If calming the nerves is your smoking excuse, try a formula containing the herbs passiflora, skullcap, valerian and hops in combination with ? ? group vitamin formula. This will calm your nerves and decrease the desire to smoke. Your children, hopefully over 18 years, will also benefit from these herbs. After giving up smoking you then need to repair the lungs. Take cod liver oil which contains vitamins A (essential for healthy mucous membranes) and essential fatty acids in combination with vitamins E and ?.
