COLD SORES (HERPES SIMPLEX): TYPES AND TREATMENT
The herpes virus is related to chickenpox and is highly contagious. As with chickenpox, it first appears as painful nodules, then blisters, then pustules, followed by scabs. The Herpes simplex virus comes in two forms. Type 1 usually appears as cold sores around the mouth. Type 2 is genital herpes which occurs on male and female genitalia and which is sexually transmitted. Both types are contagious in the period when the sores or lesions are apparent, just forming or just healing. This may cover a 2 week period and great care should be taken to avoid passing the virus on as it is difficult to cure and recurs.
Pregnant women may pass on the infection to the unborn child in the placenta, but more commonly during childbirth by way of the infected vagina. Infected babies have a high risk of congenital abnormalities of the central nervous system and the brain. It is difficult to treat as drugs may be more life-threatening than the disease.
As treatment is difficult, the most effective way to manage the illness is to attend to diet and lifestyle. Vitamin ? foods such as fresh, leafy, green vegetables, whole grains, liver, yoghurt, sunflower seeds and a good quality ? complex are important.
The dietary aspect of treating herpes is centered on two amino acids: arginine and lysine. Under laboratory conditions the virus grows well if supplied with arginine whereas lysine inhibits growth. Avoid foods highest in arginine – chocolate nuts, carob, buckwheat, whole wheat and cooked oatmeal. Ea foods high in lysine such as fish, shellfish, chicken, beef, cheese all kinds of beans, milk and eggs. Stick to this diet and take a lysine supplement. Zinc is also proving of great importance in treating this disease. Echinacea is a herb which stimulates the immune system and has anti-viral properties.
Rest, relaxation and sleep are very important to control stress. Stress will bring on an attack very quickly and stress management is critical. A Canberra psychologist, Magdulski, used relaxation therapy and self-hypnosis on 39 patients with herpes and followed them up for 14-37 months. None of the 39 had a recurrence. Exercise and fresh air also contribute to peace of mind and good health.
