ALLERGIES AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: HOW DOES IT WORK?
Irrespective of whether an allergy is classifiable in the narrow medical sense or the broader ecological sense, it is, nevertheless, a trauma, which involves a breakdown in the body’s immune system.
I have found from my own experience, that a basic understanding of the immune system, how it functions and what happens to it, is an important aid in developing the correct approach to food and chemical allergies. Many of us have only the vaguest notion of how our bodies work because our education system is fundamentally barren on this subject. Also there is much about the immune system that is not yet understood. Until recently, medical science has had a narrow picture of the manner in which an allergen reacts within the body, and the resultant destructive effects. It has now been accepted that there are many other types of allergic responses which do not fit into the understood pattern. However, for this brief look at the immune system, it suffices to use the conventional medical interpretation of an allergic reaction.
The purpose of the immune system is to guard the body against viruses, germs, undigested protein and any other substances which are likely to be harmful or toxic. These substances are known collectively, as antigens. One of the first signs of failure in the immune system, is a growing tendency to suffer from colds and ‘flu. As a result, further weakening of the immune system may exacerbate a susceptibility to food and chemical sensitivities.
