STEPS TO A HEALTHY HEART: SUPPORT GROUPS AT YOUR SERVICE
You’re not alone. You know the statistics well enough to realise that heart attacks, surgeries and angioplasties happen millions of times to millions of men and women each and every year. While you may not derive a great deal of comfort by simply knowing that, you may very well get a lot of benefit from talking with and getting to know some of the men and women in your “cardiac club”.
Many hospitals and medical centres have established regular group sessions for patients to get together and chat about this and that. They share ideas about things to do, low-fat recipes to prepare, wonderful restaurants that serve delicious food while catering to special heart-healthy requests, and just plain old-fashioned camaraderie. Some groups even offer special meetings for cardiac spouses. Ask your hospital whether they have such programs and, if not, where you might find a group.
One cardiac spouse took this to the limit. Rhoda Levin began by writing a book called Heart Mates, recalling her experiences following her husband’s heart attack and offering suggestions as to how to cope with the reality. The book is in paperback, and you might want to read it. My only criticism is that the emphasis is on living with heart disease rather than beating heart disease.
