CHILDHOOD ASTHMA: REALIZING DISEASE
The introduction of asthma clinics has greatly improved the care of children with asthma as it means the parents have a place to go to discuss any problems that may arise. It also ensures they do not have to wait for an appointment but have open access to the doctor or nurse. Nor is there any reason to feel guilty about contacting your GP. For many parents it is a place to discuss their fears and worries, for example the question of taking cortisone. Hopefully in the next few years all surgeries will run these clinics so the standard of care will become much higher.
One of the most exciting developments in the past few years has been the increased interest and usage of alternative or complementary techniques in the management of asthma. Most of these are not given to cure the disease but to stimulate the vital force within the body to function efficiently. What we call disease is actually a decline of the vital force which drives the body’s defenses, and it is caused by anxiety cold, eating too much, drinking too much, exhaustion, shock, inhaling polluted air, drink, food, liquids, fumes and so on. When the tone of the vital force within has been lowered, many things come out of balance, bacterial growth may find favourable conditions to increase, glands may produce too little or too much of their secretions; in fact a thousand things may go wrong, including the ability of the body to prevent the development of a wheezing attack.
The principle in acupuncture is to correct the obstruction of energy along the various channels in the body, thus restoring a normal flow of this energy or life force. Once this is done the body will then heal itself.
One of the main thrusts of homoeopathy – which is far more understandable now than in earlier times – is the use of minute doses. Hahnemann, the founder of homoeopathy taught that the smaller the potency of the drug administered the more easily it is absorbed by the sick body, which rejects strong doses. Remarkable cures have been recorded with this treatment since it was first instituted. Many medicines in several branches of healing are administered far too strongly. A sick body can make better use of smaller doses administered more frequently than it can of giant, powerful doses shoved down the gullet like a knockout blow to a boxer. I know with conventional medicine that increasing the dose of medicine usually does not increase the chances of success in treatment but often just produces more unwanted effects.
When considering herbal medicine one of the fallacies advanced by allopaths is that herbs are too primitive, raw, impure and weak to be effective and that they are only usable when they have been concentrated, refined, turned into quintessential extracts and so on. This is absolutely untrue. As with other forms of alternative medicine, the herbalist is looking not specifically to cure the condition but to nourish the body and let it heal itself. It is ridiculous to suggest that they must do this in the same way as the conventional orthodox physicians do. If you take an old lady with hypothermia from the cold you do not warm her up very quickly, but gradually and gently. If someone is very dehydrated then it is vital to give them fluids slowly and with great care. So why should this be different with any other condition?
I believe we are entering upon an age of awareness when people all over the world are becoming conscious of a need for enlightenment and alive to the alternatives that are available. At present it is often necessary to take conventional medicine for asthma attacks as it is a serious condition. However, prevention of attacks is the real key to controlling the condition and alternative methods including acupuncture, homoeopathy, hypnosis and herbalism can all be used for this, and also be used where the wheezing is mild.
