DIFFERENT QUESTIONS ABOUT CHILDHOOD ASTHMA
Should we avoid emotional upsets in our child?
When your child is correctly treated there should be complete control of his or her asthma. With this control any child can throw a tantrum, rant and rave or laugh heartily without any deterioration in the chest condition. If there is not total control then such events may well bring on a bout of wheezing. Rather than wrap your child up in cotton wool it is better to go for optimum control of symptoms. So do not become over-protective as this will not help your child’s emotional development. Having decided on this principle it is still worth not inviting trouble by trying to anticipate any problems that may develop.
If your own child does have a degree of emotional asthma, try to identify the causes for this and discuss them.
At what time of day is it best to use the inhalers?
This obviously depends on the severity of the asthma. If it is mild then it is usually controllable by giving medication in the morning and evening. This makes the whole condition much simpler to manage as it is reasonably easy to remember treatment when you get up and when you go to bed but surprisingly difficult in the day. If the asthma is more severe then it may be necessary to take the medication to school. A metered aerosol is small enough to be carried in a pocket and can be used when necessary.
Will the school usually be able to give the medication?
Briefly the answer to this question is ‘yes’, as long as the teacher has been told exactly what to do and has it clearly written down as to the exact medications that your child is taking and how often they should be given. Also remember that asthma can be very frightening to teachers and most of them are given far too little information by parents and are then criticized for not acting correctly when a problem arises.
My husband smokes cigarettes at home. Will this affect my child’s asthma?
For the asthmatic there is only one rule about smoking: Don’t! Irritability of the airways is a fundamental fault in asthma. To irritate them further with cigarette smoke is stupid. Tests have clearly shown that living in a house with a smoker is almost as bad for the child as actually smoking a cigarette themselves. This is a perfect opportunity for your husband to give up himself and make the house a generally much purer place to live. It amazes me how often I am asked this question and how disappointed most smokers are with the answer!
