GERMAN MEASLES (RUBELLA)
Rubella is a virus which is highly contagious. A person can catch rubella by being sneezed or coughed on by an infected person. It most commonly affects children and adolescents but can also affect adults. The first symptoms are aches and pains and a pink, spotted rash behind the ears, on the chest and limbs. The eyes and the lymph glands get very sore. Bed rest and lots of fluids are the only treatment usually needed for rubella. The itchiness of the rash can be relieved with calamine lotion or Stop Itch Formula.
The greatest danger of rubella is to the unborn fetus. It can cause deafness and blindness, and damage to the brain and heart. The danger period is in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. Pregnant women who have been exposed to rubella should see their medical practitioner as soon as possible.
The best way to treat the child is to keep him or her in a darkened room with one shaded light. Manage the fever and give plenty of water and warm broth to drink.
