ILLNESSES OF CHILDREN: HYPOGLYCEMIA AND HYPOTHERMIA
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
When the blood sugar (glucose) is at a level below that needed for normal bodily function, it can affect not only good health but also behaviour. Children who are hypoglycemic often have one or more of the following symptoms – nervousness, cold sweats, weakness, a feeling of fatigue and irritability, confusion, unusual behaviour, and in extreme cases such as insulin dependent diabetes, unconsciousness can occur. All of the above symptoms can be relieved by taking sugar. However, the process repeats itself and the symptoms return. Sufferers of diabetes must see their medical practitioner for treatment and a child who is a diabetic and suffers a ‘hypo’ must be given sugar urgently.
Low blood sugar is very often traced to poor diet and an excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates over too long a period. A high sugar diet worsens the condition by increasing the demand for insulin (the hormone needed to utilize glucose within the body). As the blood insulin increases, the sugar level falls, and if too much insulin is produced then it lowers the body’s glucose level and aggravates the condition. Eating more sugar only temporarily relieves the condition because the insulin levels soon rise and down falls the blood sugar level.
Changing the diet is the only way of changing the condition and helping to prevent the possible onset of diabetes mellitus later in life. A diet low in refined carbohydrates and fat and
higher in protein and complex carbohydrates will, over a period, return blood sugar levels to normal.
Children with mild episodes respond to orange juice, honey and dried fruits. Clinical studies have found that supplementing with the mineral chromium, found in GTF (glucose tolerance factor) chromium yeast, can alleviate the symptoms of hypoglycemia within 3 months. The mineral magnesium may help reduce glucose induced insulin secretion.
Supplements
Magnesium phosphate children over 6 years
Compound 1 tablet 3 times daily
GTF chromium yeast 1 tablet twice daily
Hypothermia
It is unusual for children to suffer hypothermia in Australia unless they have been exposed to cold winds and water. During hypothermia the body temperature drops below the norm, pulse and breathing slows, the child or adult may be confused and tired and, if not treated properly and quickly, may die.
If possible, move the victim out of the elements, away from cold winds and damp. Warm them so the temperature rises gradually, using two blankets lying on top of each other, and your own body stripped to give more direct warmth. Under no circumstances use heaters, fire, alcohol or massage to warm the person. This can cause a rush of blood to the skin which can result in a sudden drop in body core temperature, worsening the condition. If the person is conscious, give them sips of warm sweet drinks or soup.
