Aldactone (Spironolactone)
WHAT ABOUT SLOW HEARTBEATS?
A completely different type of set of heart rhythm disturbances are those that lead to excessive slowing of the heartbeat (in contrast to rapid heartbeats). These occur relatively commonly in patients with a history of a heart attack. The normal heartbeat is a contraction, or beating, of the pumping chambers of the heart in response to electrical signals that begin in the natural heart pacemaker (the sinoatrial node), which is located in the right collecting chamber, or right atrium. The electrical signals generated by this natural biologic pacemaker are conducted through the heart’s “wiring” to the ventricles or pumping chambers. If the normal heart pacemaker functions improperly, the heartbeat will be excessively slow. Similarly, if the electrical wiring connecting the normal biological pacemaker to the ventricles (pumping chambers) is malfunctioning, the heartbeat will also be slow. Such slowing can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, or even loss of consciousness. Fortunately, even severe heartbeat slowing is rarely immediately fatal, and is easily treatable. Pacemakers, extremely effective for the treatment of slow heartbeats, provide electrical signals to the ventricles that stimulate them to contract, resulting in a regular heartbeat at a normal rate. Pacemakers are implanted during a brief operation, which may last only an hour or so, through a small incision under the left or right collarbone, and the pacemaker itself, which is about the size of the body of a wristwatch, is connected to the heart by means of a flexible wire (lead) that delivers the electrical impulses to the ventricles. The batteries in these devices last seven to twelve years, and patients can lead entirely normal lives when they have pacemakers. Contrary to what many people think, pacemakers are perfectly safe around various home and industrial appliances, including microwave ovens, refrigerators, airport metal detectors, and so on. Patients with pacemakers face no restrictions whatsoever from their usual activities, including physical exercise.
