Atenolol (Tenormin)
RISK FACTORS OF HEART DISEASE: ALCOHOL
Alcohol abuse is a major cause of obesity, especially in men, and as such it presumably adds to the risk of coronary heart disease. Also, some people who take even a few drinks a day develop very high blood-fat (triglyceride) levels.
Yet the relation between alcohol and coronary heart disease is far from simple. Patients dying of alcoholic cirrhosis often have very little atherosclerosis; but as they have usually eaten poorly for months or years, and have often lost weight, this tells us little about what alcohol does directly. Alcoholics who are reasonably fit seem to have a rather average amount of atherosclerosis; this has been shown in a study of people dying in motor accidents.
Alcohol could even have some preventive effect, for moderate drinking increases levels of the apparently protective lipoprotein, HDL. But a follow-up study carried out in Gothenburg by Dr Lars Wilhelmsen does suggest that people with serious alcohol problems have an increased risk of dying with coronary heart disease.
There is no reason to suspect that 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day (on average) are in any way harmful; larger amounts can lend to many medical and social problems.
