HOW TYPE A (HIGH ACHIEVERS) ACHIEVE HEART DISEASE
The fourth category of stress is more difficult both to quantify and to control. But it would appear that circulatory diseases and disorders happen more often to a certain type of individual, one who could be classified as a high achiever. People of this kind are commonly referred to as ‘Type A’s.
John Buckley, Director of the Arterial Disease Clinic in the UK, makes the point that it is this ‘Type A’ kind of person who, when being treated with chelation therapy, doesn’t want to complement the treatment with the lifestyle changes the clinic recommends. This in itself is typical of Type A (don’t-mess-with-me-and-my-lifestyle) behaviour.
Type A people seem to predominate in the arterial disease profile to such an extent that Dr Van Der Schaar, who has been working with circulatory problems for most of his professional life (and only recently with those who have other illnesses such as cancer) was initially amazed by the personality differences between his circulatory disease patients and others.
Type A behaviour is characterized by the following:
hurry sickness
score keeping
obsession with numbers (especially number 1)
insecurity
hostility and aggression
Unfortunately all of these traits cause the body to run at a fast pace all the time, without a chance to recover, slow down and take stock. Supplies of the hormones released in response to stress, such as cortisone, quickly become depleted, as do supplies of other stress-reactive hormones, such as those from the thyroid gland.
Body repair work gets sidetracked and the person becomes exhausted, although hyped up. This pattern goes on until the hyped-up person finally runs out of steam and enters the
countdown period prior to a total breakdown in health, such as a stroke or heart attack.
Angina is commonly suffered by type A people, as is high blood pressure and the tension headaches often related to this. These become worse until breakdown point is reached.
