MEDICATIONS OFTEN PRESCRIBED FOR PATIENTS WITH HEART DISEASE: ASPIRIN AND LIKE DRUGS
These drugs prevent platelets from sticking together. The oldest and best studied is aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid or ASA), long known to be an effective pain reliever and fever remedy. Aspirin is very effective in preventing heart attack and coronary-related death, especially in patients with prior heart attack or unstable angina. It should probably be given to most or all patients with coronary artery diseases unless they are allergic (rare).
ASA-like drugs such as ticlopidine and clopidogrel also prevent platelets from sticking together. All these drugs have been widely studied and are quite effective, although aspirin is the most commonly used because of its long history, ease of use and inexpensiveness. ASA does, however, cause occasional stomach upset, and even ulcers or bleeding from the lining of the stomach. Other, newer drugs appear to be even more effective at preventing platelets from sticking together and are very useful in preventing heart attacks and prolonging life in patients with unstable angina or at high risk for clotting, but they may cause more bleeding.
