ANGINA AND SMOKING: SOME IDEAS
Just as planning can help you to stop smoking, it may also help you to remain a non-smoker. The skills you needed to get you through the difficult first few days or even weeks can also help you in the future if the temptation to smoke arises. Your smoker’s diary may give you some indication of times that you need to be particularly careful in the future. It is worth occasionally reminding yourself of any tactics that were especially useful to you in coping with them. Below are a few more tactics that you may find helpful to staying off cigarettes permanently.
Avoid complacency. One of the commonest reasons for starting to smoke again is that people simply ‘felt like a cigarette’, had ‘just one or two’ and became hooked on smoking again.
Be careful of situations in which you previously smoked. In particular, be careful if you previously smoked when drinking. Alcohol is a well-known destroyer of good resolutions. Before going out for a drink, think about how you will cope with any temptation. Remember to say ‘NO’.
Tell people if they offer you a cigarette that you don’t smoke, not that you’ve given up. It sounds more positive and discourages them from offering you cigarettes that you may find difficult to turn down.
Remember ‘the con’. Every time you see an advertisement for cigarettes, or see them for sale in the tobacconist, remember that someone has spent vast amounts of money to tempt you to ruin your health and to provide them with profits. Enjoy the fact that you are no longer taken in by the con.
Mark a day in your diary to look back every month at the benefits you have gained by not smoking. Better health, pride, as well as financial rewards are within your grasp.
Be prepared to cope with craving. Some ex-smokers report that they have occasional strong urges to smoke. These do not last very long, and no one is really sure why they occur, but be prepared.
Remember, if you do have a cigarette, avoid the cop-out response. We all make mistakes. Stop smoking NOW. Not tomorrow, not next week – because tomorrow never comes.
And finally . . . enjoy life as a non-smoker.
