STEPS TO A HEALTHY HEART: MAKING THE BEST USE OF A DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENT
You walk into the office, wait for your turn to see the doctor, read an old magazine, and before you know it you’re back in the elevator on your way out of the building. What happened in the appointment? What about those questions that you had? Why didn’t you mention the pains you were having?
Most patients leave the doctor’s office with a vague feeling of disappointment and frustration. That’s because they weren’t really prepared and the doctor, whose time is always limited, didn’t probe for questions. You can assure a successful and satisfying appointment by literally writing an agenda for the meeting, listing all your questions in advance. Keep a running tab through the days prior to the appointment, and then organise it all on a piece of paper you bring in with you and literally read to the doctor. You’ll be happier, and so will your doctor. Besides, you’ll get better care that way. Here are some sample questions:
What do those red pills do?
If I miss my morning dose, should I take two at lunch?
Is it OK if I take an extra walk in the evening?
Does this pain in my upper back have any significance?
Is it OK to take an extra aspirin when I get a headache since I already take one a day?
My neighbour says a special bracelet wards off angina. What do you think about that?
Remember that no question is “dumb” and you need the answers to all the questions you come up with.
