HOW TYPE A (HIGH ACHIEVERS) ACHIEVE HEART DISEASE: EXERCISE
One of the most powerful tools in the treatment of degenerative disease, experts agree, is regular physical exercise. John Buckley of the Arterial Disease Clinic says: ‘The anti-ageing properties of regular exercise are so well-documented that it is superfluous to once again make a case for it. Exercise is essential for maintaining optimum body weight, improving mood, lowering bad blood cholesterol, elevating HDL (good) cholesterol, lowering blood fats, and improving any diabetic condition. We encourage all our patients to exercise, but such programmes must be built up slowly according to the individual’s physical condition and under careful medical supervision.’
Aerobic exercise – which simply means getting the heart beating faster for about 20-30 minutes a day – is recommended because the heart, like any other muscle, needs to exercise through its range to maintain performance.
But there is no need to invest in expensive exercise equipment or enrol at the gym, unless desired for company, or to establish a regime – walking briskly is now recognized as one of the best ways of exercising the heart.
The reason for this simple enough regime is that walking sets up a subsidiary blood-pumping action in the foot which assists the circulation of blood. Additionally, walking puts stress on bones and is essential for maintaining bone strength and density. John Buckley says, ‘Bones stay fit by working against gravity: you can test this theory by going to bed for a week – use it or lose it.’
The key to exercise is regularity and suggests making a commitment, ideally with a friend, to go for a walk at a certain time at least five days a week. The only reason for joining a health club, in his view, is that in paying to use something one is motivated not to waste the facility. Whatever the choices made, tests have shown that any aerobic exercise programme followed for 20 minutes daily can drop elevated blood sugar levels by 40-50 points within six weeks – this information could be of great value to diabetics who are known to have particularly severe forms of circulatory disease, caused mainly by elevated sugar levels in the bloodstream.
Incidentally, squash, and possibly jogging, are now thought to be two of the worst forms of strenuous exercise. These cause blood to be driven too hard through the arterial system and if that blood contains the elements which promote arterial disease, then that process is actually speeded up.
