ANGINA AND YOUR DIET: FAT
There are two problems with eating too much fat. Firstly, fat is loaded with calories, and too many calories lead to becoming overweight. Secondly, too much saturated fat is linked with a higher risk of heart disease. The more saturated fat you eat, the more cholesterol you get in your blood. The cholesterol builds up on the inside of your arteries, especially in the heart. Eventually the arteries can get furred and narrowed which can lead to angina. High cholesterol is perhaps the major cause of atherosclerosis
It is not necessarily the cholesterol in our diet that makes our blood cholesterol high. We only eat approximately 250-500mg of cholesterol per day. Compare this to the amount of fat we eat daily which is approximately 85-100g. We eat at least 200 times as much fat as we do cholesterol. Also there are very few foods which contain significant amounts of cholesterol, these being eggs, offal, shrimps and prawns. It is far more important if you wish to reduce your blood cholesterol to cut down the fat in your diet and not solely concentrate on reducing your dietary cholesterol.
The health message is to cut down on the total amount of fat you eat, and when you do eat fat choose unsaturated fat.
