MEDICATIONS OFTEN PRESCRIBED FOR PATIENTS WITH HEART DISEASE: DIURETICS (“WATER PILLS”)
Many patients with heart muscle weakness develop heart failure, as detailed above. Extra salt and water retained in the body can cause bloating, ankle swelling, and especially shortness of breath, because of an increased amount of salt and water in the blood vessels in the lungs. In such patients, excess salt in the diet?for example, from salty foods such as pickles, peanuts, pretzels, potato chips, and so on?can cause a significant worsening of symptoms. Although it is important to be careful not to add too much salt at the table, most salt in the diet comes from the “hidden” sources, in packaged, canned and prepared foods. As a general rule, low-salt diets focus on fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, pasta and meats.
In addition to limiting salt intake, many patients with heart failure need diuretics, which are medications that cause the kidney to allow more salt and water to pass into the urine and be eliminated from the body. These medications may be inconvenient to take since they cause frequent urination, but have very important benefits in increasing well-being and decreasing breathlessness. Patients with heart failure are often instructed to weigh themselves fairly frequently; if there is a sudden weight gain, such as a pound per day or more over a few days, usually this indicates extra salt and water being retained by the body and may indicate the need for additional diuretics.
