SENSE ORGANS: SENSE OF HEAT AND COLD
The sense organs for heat are distributed unevenly over the body, the face being particularly well provided. Physicians have found that the palm of the hand is especially sensitive to heat. If we suspect inflammation in an area of the body we feel for local heat and we determine this by placing the very center of the palm of the hand over the spot. Lepers unfortunately sometimes lose their heat and pain sensations, and may hold a burning object until their fingers are severely burned. Heat sensation is easily one of our best protective devices.
There are also special sense endings by which we feel cold. They evidently do not give as intense sensations as do those of heat, for it is not uncommon in severely cold weather for perfectly normal people to freeze their noses, ears, or fingers without realizing that they are doing so. Of course, for the degrees of temperature where burning or freezing does not take place, the psychic reaction usually determines the patient’s comfort. Perhaps the number of heat and cold receptors may have something to do with this. As I feel comfortable in the outdoor winter weather and very uncomfortable in houses heated and dried as never before in the history of man, perhaps my psyche and collection of nerve endings keep me lonesome in my feelings.

Sinemet (Carbidopa Levodopa)
NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR CARING OF ILL CHILDREN: HEART; BODIES
Mending the Heart
New technology is helping surgeons repair what used to be deadly defects of the newborn’s heart, such as holes in the interior chamber walls, big blood vessels that are connected to the wrong chamber, and bad valves. All carried high death rates; babies who survived were sickly.
Today, surgeons aim for complete correction of coronary defects rather than temporary relief. They operate on smaller and younger infants, cutting and stitching hearts the size of limes. The salvage rate: 75 percent.
Straightening Crooked Bodies
Orthopedic surgeons now aggressively attack crooked spines, or scoliosis, which may afflict between 5 and 10 percent of all teenagers. They have better surgical methods and braces and new ways to diagnose curved backbones early, before the spines twist into humps forever.
From the time she was 8, Nicole Kuper of Cleveland fought to straighten her spine, first with braces that she wore for 23 hours a day and later with surgery that put rods in her back. At 13, Nicole was still in a cast, but her curvature has straightened almost to normal. “I can’t wait to go swimming and get on the track team,” she says.

Kemadrin (Procyclidine)
VITAMINS AS NUTRIENTS FOR YOUR BODY: DAILY NEEDS AND SUPPLEMENTS
Meeting daily needs
Most foods are poor sources of vitamin D and hence no values are published. Analyses have been made for a number of B-complex vitamins. The diet that supplies sufficient thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin will also furnish enough of the other ? factors.
In selecting food sources for vitamins we should keep in mind (1) how much of a given food we would ordinarily eat, (2) how often the food is eaten, and (3) how stable the vitamin may be after processing or cooking. Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin A, but it will make little difference in the average diet, because it is so often left on the plate or, when eaten, is consumed in such small amounts. A raw fruit might be a good source of ascorbic acid but might contain little of the vitamin after drying or canning.
Wheat germ, dried yeast, and fish-liver oils are rich sources of several vitamins but are generally regarded as dietary supplements rather than basic items of the diet. Liver and other organ meats are outstanding sources of vitamin A and B-complex vitamins; yet their contribution to the diet will be important only if these foods are included on a fairly regular basis?for example, once a week.
Vitamin supplements
For the healthy individual, the diet that includes recommended levels of the Four Food Groups together with some oils for vitamin E will meet the needs for vitamins.
Supplements of vitamins A and D, when taken over a period of time, could result in toxic symptoms. Supplements of the water-soluble vitamins in excess of body need will be excreted in the urine. Thus, they are a waste of money.
Vitamin supplements are indicated when the diet, through illness or ignorance, has been inadequate over a long period of time. In such circumstances the vitamin in a concentrated form is a rapid form of therapy. Equally important is dietary counseling so that the affected individual makes the necessary changes in his diet.
Vitamin supplements are indicated in some specific disease conditions: pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, sprue, cystic fibrosis; and following surgery or injury from burns. In these situations the intake is usually much greater than that supplied by a diet alone. The physician prescribes the kinds and amounts of vitamins that are to be taken.

Brewer’s yeast – up to 5 tbsp.
E, d-alpha tocopherol – up to 1,200 IU. Twice as much if mixed tocopherols are used
A, natural, from fish liver oils – up to 100,000 units
Rutin – up to 200 mg.
?-up to 3,000 mg.
B-complex, natural, high potency RNA, ribo-nucleic acid – 30 to 300 mg. in tablets; or obtain by
using plenty of brewer’s yeast

Lecithin – 2 tbsp.
Kelp – 5 tablets or 2 tsp. of granules
Garlic, or garlic oil capsules
Whey powder or tablets
Natural multi-vitamin-mineral formula
Multi-enzyme digestive formula for older people
All the above vitamins and supplements have been shown by numerous clinical and other studies to be potent rejuvenative factors, which can prolong life and extend youthful vitality into old age. Two other supplements, which I deliberately left off the list, because of virtual impossibility to obtain them fresh, are wheat germ and wheat germ oil. They can be marvelous rejuvenative foods, if they are absolutely fresh and non-rancid.
Juices
Fresh pineapple, papaya, lemon, lime, apricot and other fresh vegetable and fruit juices, in season.
Herbs
Ginseng, Hydrocotyle Asiatica (minor), damiana (for males), licorice (for females), sarsaparilla, Gotu-Kola (Hydrocotyle Asiatica, major), falce unicorn, elder, garlic.
Specifics
Brewer’s yeast, vitamins E, ?, ? and B-complex, RNA, ginseng and other rejuvenative herbs, garlic, rutin, Airola Diet of special rejuvenative foods.
Notes
1. The single most potent rejuvenative food is brewer’s yeast. With its rich source of rejuvenative nucleic acids (15% of its weight!), and all the anti-aging B-vitamins, including B6, organic zinc – plus 40% of highest quality proteins! – brewer’s yeast consumed regularly can help to keep you young, prevent degenerative diseases and halt aging processes.
2. Vitamin E – by preventing oxidation processes in the body, increasing cell oxygenation, keeping endocrine glands, including sex glands, in excellent working condition and in aiding in sex hormone production – is a powerful rejuvenator.
3. Regular use of licorice, false unicorn, elder, and vitamin E can help to postpone female menopause by supplying natural hormone substances and/or helping the body in hormone production.
4. Vitamin Be decreases in our system with age, increasing the body’s susceptibility to infections and illnesses of advanced age. Therefore, the dietary supplementation of B6 is imperative for prevention of premature aging. Brewer’s yeast is the best source of vitamin B6.

TREATMENT OF STRESS BREAKDOWN: TIME OUT
When we have to deal with unremitting stress and suffer anxiety symptoms as a result, we can prevent further stress breakdown by taking little holidays. I think it is better in the long run for an over-worked person with a responsible job to take the occasional day off work when feeling over-stressed. Even if at the time the person knows he or she really isn’t sick enough to warrant a day off, occasional time off may prevent a breakdown which could well result in weeks or months away from work. Sensible people in business know that occasional time off may be necessary to keep an employee working at full capacity.
The office worker should, if possible, get away from the job during the lunch hour and do something different. Sometimes that little break can be very helpful. A sleep during the lunch hour is even better, if it is possible.
Whatever one’s religious beliefs, at least one day off work each week, a day of total rest, is essential to good mental health.
It is always a good idea for a person with a demanding job to do something at weekends that doesn’t resemble his or her work. The intellectual ought to do something requiring physical exercise; the manual worker might do something which is intellectually stimulating.

ASTHMA AND DIET
A vegetarian diet excluding all meat, dairy products, fish and eggs showed significant improvement in 92 per cent of asthma sufferers. This diet also excluded chlorinated tap water, sugar, coffee, salt, apples and citrus fruits; these fruits are high in salicylates.
As vegan diets are usually low in iron and vitamin B12, supplementation of the diet could be needed. In this case it would be wise to talk to your naturopath or medical practitioner.
Supplementation with vitamin ? can help. Vitamin ? appears to have an anti-asthmatic effect. Vitamin ? can also help reduce the symptoms of the common cold and improve resistance to infection.
Children 500 mg daily for children 6 to 12 years of age
Adults l000 mg vitamin ? combined with the bioflavonoids morning and night
One of the most useful herbs is liquorice. This herb has a corticosteroid action similar to that of beclomethasone. The active constituents of liquorice include glycyrrhizin, with steroid-like effect which gives it its anti-inflammatory action. Liquorice has long been used in herbal medicine for the treatment of many bronchial complaints. Large doses over a long period of time may cause sodium retention and potassium excretion. Potassium intake should be increased and a low sodium diet followed.
Children 6 to 12 years 500mg of liquorice twice daily before meals
Adults 1,000mg just before meals 3 times daily
The inclusion of the simple onion or garlic in the diet will help improve resistance to colds and flu. These two foods should not be overlooked as they are really good for you. Studies have also found that these good foods may help reduce the asthmatic response to airborne allergens. Eat fresh garlic and onions daily. If the taste or smell on the breath is too strong then take a garlic supplement.
Odorless garlic 6 to 12 years of age 50mg equivalent to fresh garlic with food morning and night
Freeze-dried garlic adults 1 tablet equivalent to 2,000mg fresh garlic before food each night
The herbs euphorbia and grindelia have been used traditionally in the treatment of asthma. Grindelia has antispasmodic effects that help relax the bronchioles, relieving mild asthma attacks. Euphorbia is mentioned in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as an anti-asthmatic herb and when used for the treatment of asthma is best taken with grindelia. A tablet containing 220mg of euphorbia and 220 mg of grindelia is recommended twice daily for children 6 to 12 years, 3 times daily for adults, with food.
The addition of cod liver oil to the diet may also help. Cod liver oil contains vitamin A. This vitamin helps strengthen the mucous membranes in the lungs. Also cod liver oil contains essential fatty acids that have an anti-inflammatory effect. Cod liver oil has been used for generations in the treatment of many bronchial conditions.
Children 6 to 12 2.5 mls (1/2 teaspoon daily) just before food
Adults 5,0mls (1 teaspoon) daily just before food
If the asthma attack is accompanied by acute bronchitis then drinking three or four cups of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) tea daily will not only help relieve the asthma attack but also soothe the bronchioles.
Children 6 to 12 half adult dose
Adults 1 cup of the infusion made from the flowering apical bud 3 to 4 times daily
It must be noted that many asthmatics have multiple allergies and even the foods, medicine or herbs that help prevent asthma may also cause problems. For this reason it is best to begin any changes slowly, adding new medications or dietary changes one by one and noting the reaction. Never stop taking your practitioner’s or naturopath’s medication without consulting them first.

Artane (Trihexyphenidyl)
SENSE ORGANS: TOUCH
We would not know much of the rest of the world if we could not see or hear. Portions of both the eye and the ear are formed from the skin; and Laura Bridgman and Helen Keller, reverting to more primitive conditions, overcame blindness and deafness by the sense of touch in the skin.
As they severally felt the side, leg, ear, tail, trunk, or tusk they respectively decided that the elephant was very like a wall, tree, fan, rope, snake, or spear. The “educated finger” of the surgeon is developed throughout his practice to obtain delicate feeling and is a great aid to him. To intensify this training many surgeons use only one hand for this purpose, handling instruments with the other when it is necessary to work by feel. Almost never do I feel a pulse with my right hand.
Different parts of the body vary greatly as to the amount of touch sensation that they have. The skin of the finger tips is, as you know, very delicate in its feeling. You could not begin to feel a touch in the small of your back as you would on the finger. There is another interesting element about the sense of touch which physiologists call “tactile discrimination.” The other evening I placed two pencils side by side so that there was possibly a quarter of an inch between their tips. With these two tips I touched my wife’s cheek and asked her how many pencil tips she felt. She felt one. I then touched her finger tip and she had no hesitation in telling me that there were two points. If any part of the body other than the finger were available for reading Braille, it would not have enough tactile discrimination to do it.
