NUTRIENTS FOR YOUR BODY: SOME FALLACIES AND FACTS
1. Fallacy. Potatoes, bread, meat, and milk are fattening. Grapefruit is not fattening.
Facts. No single food can be called fattening or nonfattening. A calorie from one food is the same as a calorie from another food. Some foods provide more calories than others. One becomes overweight only if the total calorie intake is greater than the calorie expenditure of the body.
2. Fallacy. Boiled potatoes are more fattening than baked potatoes.
Facts. Potatoes of the same weight will have the same number of calories whether boiled or baked. The hidden calories in the form of butter, or sour cream, would rapidly increase the number of calories.
3. Fallacy. Polyunsaturated fats are lower in calories than saturated fats.
Facts. Gram for gram, all pure fat – polyunsaturated or saturated – contains the same number of calories. One tablespoon of whipped butter or whipped margarine will have fewer calories than 1 tablespoon regular butter or margarine because air has been whipped into it. But gram for gram, or pound for pound, the whipped fats would contain the same number of calories as the regular fats.
4. Fallacy. Toast has fewer calories than bread.
Facts. The caloric content of a slice of bread does not change with toasting. The bread has lost some weight in toasting because it has lost some of its water content.
