Pigment Stains
Lasers also remove color blotches (port wine stains, cafe au lait stains) from the skin. Says Dr. Robin Ashinoff, head of laser service at New York University Medical Center in New York City, “We can remove the stains as early as birth. That’s best – the surface is much smaller.”
Tattoo Removal
High-energy lasers can, in time, burn away the colors that have been tattooed under the skin. A grayish blotch is sometimes left in its place. The method is controversial, and some skin specialists prefer surgical removal.
Hair Implants
To cover a bald region on the scalp, dermatologists take hairs from the patient’s hirsute body regions and transplant them, rooting them into the pate. Praising the method is Dr. Walter Unger, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Toronto in Canada. He says that using a laser for this procedure produces a better, more natural-looking result than traditional surgery provides. The method is still experimental and under study.
