WHY DO THE MUSCLES HURT?
Much of the pain associated with muscle contraction headaches comes from painfully contracted muscles, and this contraction can occasionally be felt by touching the scalp or neck muscles with your hand. The contracted muscles are often tender to any pressure and may feel like knots beneath the skin. Occasionally this tightness is evidenced by a furrowing of the brow or by a frown.
In addition to the muscle contraction, which in many ways is similar to a cramp, other abnormalities in the tissues, blood vessels, and tendons can add to the discomfort of this condition. In contrast to the vasodilation of migraine pain (an enlargement of the blood vessels), there is usually a constriction of blood vessels in muscle contraction headaches. Periodically, the blood vessels may dilate and throb. Medical science does not have a complete understanding of this process, but it seems likely that contracted muscles, a reduced blood supply, and an irritating substance found in the region of the pain are all responsible in a complicated way for the production of the discomfort.
