Mending the Heart
New technology is helping surgeons repair what used to be deadly defects of the newborn’s heart, such as holes in the interior chamber walls, big blood vessels that are connected to the wrong chamber, and bad valves. All carried high death rates; babies who survived were sickly.
Today, surgeons aim for complete correction of coronary defects rather than temporary relief. They operate on smaller and younger infants, cutting and stitching hearts the size of limes. The salvage rate: 75 percent.
Straightening Crooked Bodies
Orthopedic surgeons now aggressively attack crooked spines, or scoliosis, which may afflict between 5 and 10 percent of all teenagers. They have better surgical methods and braces and new ways to diagnose curved backbones early, before the spines twist into humps forever.
From the time she was 8, Nicole Kuper of Cleveland fought to straighten her spine, first with braces that she wore for 23 hours a day and later with surgery that put rods in her back. At 13, Nicole was still in a cast, but her curvature has straightened almost to normal. “I can’t wait to go swimming and get on the track team,” she says.
