NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND CHILDREN?S CARE: OPERATING IN THE WOMB
The great progress in treating children after birth has encouraged physicians to experiment with therapy before birth. “The fetus has become a patient,” says Dr. Michael Harrison, co-director of the fetal treatment program at the University of California, San Francisco. “We used to be frustrated when we would get newborns, who were too sick and too far advanced at birth to help,” he says.
Thanks to ultrasound technology, doctors actually see and diagnose fetal defects in the womb such as enlarged bladders (caused by urinary tract blockages) and enlarged heads (caused by hydrocephalus, or water on the brain) and correct them before the mother delivers a sick baby.
Dr. Harrison performed the first intrauterine (within the uterus) bladder operation on an unborn child. To prevent urine from backing up and damaging the baby’s kidneys, he opened up a hole in the mother’s abdomen and uterus and inserted a small tube into the fetus’s bladder to bypass the blocked urethra. Water on the brain is treated with similar fetal surgery.
