NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN CHILDREN?S CARE: ETHICAL DILEMMA
Physicians and parents now face excruciating ethical decisions. For example, very small preemies are more likely to suffer brain damage. Should doctors save an infant who will be a severely disabled adult? “It’s a very difficult issue,” says Dr. Avroy Fanaroff, director of nurseries at University Hospital in Cleveland. “Fortunately, we don’t run into the problem but once or twice a year.”
Dr. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General, ruled in the early 1980s that any hospital that permits such infants to die would lose all government support. A federal court rescinded the rule, but the doctors still had a problem.
“We consult all the doctors and nurses and parents,” says Dr. Fox of Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, “and if everyone agrees that the baby is too badly injured, we do not increase our treatment. We do not take anything away.”
Dr. Fanaroff says, “We consult everyone, and if we get agreement, then we do not resuscitate such babies if their hearts stop. And we stop the ventilators. But it’s rare.”
