DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS FOR STOMACH ULCERS (GASTRIC OR DUODENAL)
Both gastric and duodenal ulcers can be caused by, in addition to the usual nutritional or metabolic causes, severe nervous and mental stress. Therefore, before the nutritional or biological treatment can be successful, the psychological causes must be solved or removed. Persons with a predisposition for peptic ulcers should avoid all situations resulting in mental stress and prolonged nervous strain or irritability. Complete rest and relaxation from all pressing problems and worries is imperative.
Anything that can irritate the mucous membranes of the stomach and duodenum must be eliminated from the diet. Meals must be small and frequent, possibly six to eight times a day. Food must be chewed extremely well, 40 times each mouthful – fletcherised! It is important that all food is well salivated. If the patient cannot chew well, food should be liquefied or pureed in a blender, then chewed as if it were whole.
In an acute case of active ulcers, whole grains, nuts and whole-grain breads and cereals should be avoided in the beginning of the treatment. Well cooked millet cereal, with milk, is the best, and can be given even in the beginning of the treatment in small amounts. Also cooked white rice, with milk, is well tolerated. Almond milk made from blanched almonds in a blender, is very beneficial, as it binds the excess of acid in the stomach and supplies high quality proteins. Also regular milk, warmed-up to body temperature, is well tolerated, particularly raw goat’s milk. Raw goat’s milk actually helps to heal stomach ulcers. Soured milks, such as yogurt, kefir or clabbered milk, can be included. Brewer’s yeast, mixed with soured milk, can be taken on an empty stomach between meals.
Raw fruits and vegetables should be avoided for a few weeks, as many of these are especially irritating. Potatoes, squashes, yams, avocados, and raw bananas are, however, well tolerated.
All sour fruits should be avoided, especially citrus fruits. Sweet fruits can be eaten in moderation.
All fried foods must be eliminated. It has been shown that heated vegetable oils can be a contributing factor in development of ulcers.
The following must be strictly avoided: tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate, salt, and all strong spices such as white and black pepper, mustard, vinegar, chili, etc. All these are known to cause an increase in the flow of digestive juices which irritate the stomach lining. Also white sugar and soft drinks should be avoided.
Avoid food and drink that is either too hot or too cold – all drinks and foods should be consumed preferably at room or body temperature.
